A dynamic and prolific artist, in 1999 Reeba and her friend Zack produced 2000 small abstract sculptures made of various materials such as plaster, cement, found objects, paint, dye, stains, metal strips and so on. They numbered these in black ink from 1-2,000 for each of the years in the Christian Era Calendar. They also stamped the flat bottoms of these interesting objects with the words “Y2K Official Artifact” (most in green ink, some in other colors), and wrote brief phrases on them, such as “Creativity, Mimicry, Creativity” and “Mixed Diverse Needs, Wants, Hopes” and “Dreams”.
Holding one of these in your hands, you will see something like a small abstract painting in three dimensions, full of shapes, colors, textures, embedded beads or metal pieces, and even seashells. Shapes shift from crisp molded disks, bars and wedges to the forms imparted by crumbled aluminum foils or merely molded free form. The whole is invested in splashes of color applied with acrylics, oils, watercolors, dipped stains, finger streaks, inks, and even rubbed-off areas. They meet one of the best tests of good art. They hold your interest for a long time. They suggest other things, moods, feelings, and even landscapes. Each turning presents a new vista. Even though they are small. Less than a pound each and about the size of a computer mouse, they are powerful and compelling art forms.
Reeba and Zack took these to several towns and cities in Utah and Nevada, ending their adventure in Las Vegas, where they placed them, one at a time, in various public places – park benches, bus stops, window sills, or mailboxes, and so on. Then they retired to watch when they were found. Sometimes they even had conversations with the people. They placed most of the 2000 art objects in that fashion as Reeba’s tribute to the new millennium. Someday, these anonymous objects will come to the attention of other artists. None were signed by Reeba.
